Originally from Memphis, TN, James Robinson is a soul singer and vocalist deeply influenced by Stevie Wonder, Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye, Prince and the great Donny Hathaway. But, his musical influences don't end there. James's sound and performance techniques are deeply rooted in his study of jazz legends Sun Ra, Archie Shepp, Betty Carter, Duke Ellington, Mulgrew Miller, & Abbey Lincoln, to Blues greats like Johnny Guitar Watson, Syl Johnson & BB King.

 

More broadly, James has studied and drawn on musical styles of Alt-Rock band Radiohead, Southern Hip-hop legendary groups 8 Ball & MJG, and Three 6 Mafia.

 

With masterful agility and breadth and depth of imagination, James combines musical influences from Stax soul era, southern rap, jazz fusion & experimental rock.
